Psychological Challenges in Trusting Moral Machines

Jim Everett had the pleasure of attending the “Trust in Artificial Intelligence” conference held on the 11th and 12th of November 2024 in L’Aquila, Italy, to present some initial findings from our project and his other grants. This was a great opportunity to engage with leading researchers and professionals exploring the multifaceted concept of trust in AI, in a beautiful Italian town.

Jim’s talk, titled “Psychological Challenges in Trusting Moral Machines”, focused on the complexities of how humans perceive and develop trust in AI systems designed to make moral decisions, focusing on how there may be conflicts that emerge when our psychological tendencies interfere with what we may want from a normative standpoint.

The conference provided an excellent platform for exchanging ideas, sparking new collaborations, and gaining insights into diverse perspectives on trust, from philosophical debates on what trust really means, to ethical considerations in applied technological solutions.
