But have you ever thought why that is?<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Some researchers argue that one reason for this is that it offers older people psychological benefits-for example, higher self-esteem<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">(<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">e.g., Van <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Hiel<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> &amp; <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Brebels<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, 2011<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">).<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> However, despite these psychological benefits, older people also seem to exhibit higher levels of prejudice than younger adults (<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">e.g. Henry &amp; Sears, 2009<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">).\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">O<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">lder people are likely to have witnessed many instances of blatant racism compared to adolescents and young adults, which may have formed racial attitudes that persist throughout their lives. Thus, older individuals might be \u2018set in their ways\u2019, unable to translate their attitudes in terms of contemporary expressions of prejudice.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In that way, scholars suggest that in <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">order to accurately distinguish between prejudice in the older and younger populations, research needs to consider the differences between &#8216;old-fashioned prejudice&#8217; (blatant prejudice-e.g., people of different races should be segregated) and &#8216;modern prejudice&#8217; (less direct forms of prejudice).\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In this research project, Dr Kristof <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Dhont<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and colleagues explore age-related differences in prejudice.
