It restricts employment opportunities<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">and reduces workplace productivity and innovation<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Ageism also results in inequality and social exclusion, reducing social cohesion and well-being. Not only is ageism a barrier to the inclusion and full participation of older people in society, but it also affects everyone by obscuring our understanding of the ageing process. Moreover, by reinforcing negative stereotypes, ageism can even shape patterns of behaviour that are potentially detrimental to people\u2019s self-interest<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><br \/>\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In this project, the researchers <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">collaborate with the Government Office for Science to <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">review national <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> international research <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">(conducted between 19<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">79<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and 2015) that explores<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> attitudes to ageing<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. This project helps explain how certain attitudes can result in discrimination and other damaging consequences. Finally, it<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> outline<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> the prevalence of perceived age-based discrimination and its consequences for individuals and society<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">using prospective or experimental designs<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> to test the effect of different interventions to change or counter destructive age stereotypes.<br \/>\ne.g. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Contact interventions weaken the \u2018them\u2013us\u2019 age: intergenerational interaction, contact between people from different social groups<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2022 \u00a0Policies must be put in place to track and be responsive to, changing social attitudes and
