The project is currently in Phase 2.
The digitisation of Chatham Historic Dockyard Trust tape archives is almost complete. Interviews with former workers of Chatham Dockyard are in progress, and the project’s timeline through sound is filling up. First written accounts start in 1488 with the launch of the ship Grace Dieu. Written sources between 1509 and early 20th C provided us with information on contemporary soundscapes, including during the war with the Dutch in 1660s, the introduction of steam power to ships in early 19th C and the introduction of iron-clad ships in mid 19th C. The research continues.
