Time gives shape to everyday routines and is a vital means of understanding the material world at different scales. Time is central to existence and experience but it easily slips from view. This theme brings time into focus, placing it at the heart of interdisciplinary research at Kent. Recently, profound critiques have emerged of time as an evenly unfolding, sequential, universal, deterministic and linear backdrop to the social and natural world.
By catalysing Kent’s expertise on time, we will produce important new interdisciplinary research on the multi-directional ‘textures’ and relations of past, present and future. The theme will stimulate innovative research collaborations, education and public engagement, and in so doing establish Kent as a leader in this emerging field, recognised for its novel, vital and inspirational research on time.
