Therefore, research has frequently compared ASD to another developmental disorder, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">namely <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">specific language disorder (SLI). Currently, ASD and SLI are mutually exclusive diagnoses, although some research suggests that there is overlap between the two disorders<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">More specifically, b<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">oth language-<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">impaired individuals with ASD<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and individuals with <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">SLI <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">perform poorly on tests such as non-word repetition.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> In a non-word repetition test, the participant listens to non-words spoken by the tester and repeats each immediately after hearing it.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> It remains unknown whether the underlying causes of these language deficits may be different in each disorder. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The current study <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">employs a novel task<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> looking at specific performance patterns during non-word repetition <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to examine whether the underlying causes are different or
