About<\/span><\/b>\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

It <\/span>has been suggested<\/span> that autism spectrum disorder (ASD) involves a deficit in self-awareness (i.e. a deficit in the ability to monitor one\u2019s own actions). According to this theory, individuals with ASD experience less feelings of responsibility for their own actions. These suggestions <\/span>are based<\/span> on research demonstrating that <\/span>children with ASD find it hard<\/span> to discriminate between the <\/span>actions performed by themselves and actions performed by another person. <\/span>However, the tasks used in <\/span>previous<\/span> research may not have been sensitive enough to detect group differences.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The current study presents a novel task to investigate self-awareness in children with ASD.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Research Objectives<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

\u2022 To explore the extent to which individuals with autism experience difficulties in monitoring their own actions<\/span> vs someone else\u2019s actions.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 \u00a0To explore whether individuals with ASD are less able <\/span>than individuals<\/span> who do not have ASD to distinguish the actions of self and other in memory.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Programme and Methodology<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

\u2022 \u00a0Sixteen children with ASD and sixteen comparison children\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 \u00a0Computer task in which participants had to monitor their own or someone else\u2019s actions<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 Memory task involving one\u2019s own and someone else\u2019s actions<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Findings<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

\u2022 \u00a0Both groups find<\/span> it easier to <\/span>monitor and to <\/span>remember their own actions than those of the experimenter.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 \u00a0The findings do not support the notion that ASD involves a deficit in the ability to monitor one\u2019s own actions.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Impact<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

\u2022 \u00a0This project offers\u00a0<\/span>new and important information<\/span><\/b> on <\/span>aspects of self-awareness in ASD. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 \u00a0Findings can inform professionals in educational settings about the strengths and abilities of children with ASD.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n
