Michelle Secker

Research Development Officer

My role

As Research Development Officer I support the Faculty of Humanities to identify funding opportunities and develop research grant proposals to increase its external research funding:

  • working closely with senior academics within the Faculty to provide strategic support in order to increase the number, value and quality of research grant applications
  • providing information on funding opportunities and best practice, increasing opportunities for successful grants
  • providing hands-on support for proposal development from schools in the Faculty.

Prior to joining Kent in March 2018, I was Research Manager at the Centre for Sport, Physical Education and Activity Research at Canterbury Christ Church University. Overseeing a portfolio of externally funded research projects, I led and contributed to research, methodological design and reporting, as well as undertaking contract, budget and project management of the Centre’s research.

Before this I lived and worked in London, working for Greenwich Council as Policy Development Officer (strategic development/regeneration and equalities) and as Executive Officer in the research division of the Office for National Statistics.

I am passionate about the need to develop the supportive and collaborative research environment within the Faculty and more broadly.
