It is a particular pleasure to announce that Prof. Werner Krauth of Ecole Normale Sup\u00e9rieure Paris will be visiting my team during 14.-17. Nov 2022. In addition to scientific discussions on the Monte-Carlo techniques we use in our research, Werner has kindly agreed to deliver eight lectures under the heading \u201cMarkov-chain Monte Carlo: A modern primer\u201d during these dates.<\/p>\n
Werner Krauth is a world leading expert in computational physics and has authored a large number of innovative Monte-Carlo approaches to both classical and quantum many-body systems. Examples include works on the glass transition, precision calculations of the hard-sphere problem, early developments of dynamical mean field theory, and more recently, a new class of \u201cBeyond Metropolis\u201d algorithms for event chain Monte-Carlo techniques.<\/p>\n
In addition to his impact in science, Werner is well known as a passionate educator. In fact he has had a big impact on my career in this capacity, as his enthusiastic lectures on Monte-Carlo methods that I attended while pursuing my PhD degree in Paris were a seed for my own choices in developing my career in computational physics. Of course, Werner\u2019s impact in teaching has gone far beyond his local student cohort at Ecole Normale Sup\u00e9rieure in Paris. Firstly, he has authored a popular book on \u201cStatistical Mechanics: Algorithms and Computations\u201d (2006) following his signature pedagogical style in explaining physics and computation via simple algorithms. But furthermore, he has turned the book into a Massive Open Online Course under the same title (https:\/\/www.coursera.org\/learn\/statistical-mechanics<\/a>), which has drawn the participation of tens of thousands of students, globally.<\/p>\n It is a privilege therefore to have the opportunity to hear his lectures first hand here at Kent, and you are all cordially invited to do so.
