7th Modern Languages Research and Teaching Forum: Intercultural Communication & EDI in Language Education

We are pleased to announce a Call for Papers for the 7th online Modern Languages Research and Teaching Forum hosted by the University of Kent. This year the forum will be divided into two parts, each addressing one of the following crucial topics in language education: Intercultural Communication and Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion. We invite scholars, educators, and practitioners to submit papers that explore innovative approaches, methodologies, and research related to these topics.

Part 1: Bridging Cultures: The Role of Intercultural Communication in Language Education

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • The role of intercultural communication skills in enhancing language learning and teaching outcomes
  • Strategies for integrating intercultural communication theory and practice into language courses, with practical examples and case studies
  • Addressing cultural biases in language instruction and promoting awareness of global citizenship
  • The impact of digital communication tools (e.g., social media) on intercultural dialogue and language learning experiences

Part 2: Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) in Language Education: Creating Inclusive and Accessible Learning Spaces

Topics for this section include:

  • Strategies for making language education more inclusive for students from diverse backgrounds, including underrepresented groups
  • Practical approaches to ensuring equitable access to resources and opportunities for all students, including those with disabilities or learning challenges
  • The importance of culturally responsive teaching practices that honour students’ identities and experiences
  • Implementing inclusive assessment methods that accommodate diverse learning styles and needs
  • The role of language educators in promoting social justice, equity, and inclusivity both within and outside the classroom

Submission Guidelines:

We welcome a wide range of submissions, including individual papers, workshops, panel discussions. We invite contributions that provide theoretical insights, practical strategies, and/or empirical research into the themes of intercultural communication and equity, diversity, and inclusion in language education.

  • Abstract Submission: Please submit a 300-word abstract by 4 April 2025

Please note:

  • We accept both synchronous and asynchronous contributions to accommodate diverse participation preferences
  • Submission for Asynchronous Contributions: if selected, recordings will be due by 23 May. During the conference space will be given for discussion of the asynchronous papers.
  • Format: Papers should last no more than 15-20 minutes
