Puzzled! How do mothers and children interact when completing puzzles?

Parents and children often work together to solve problems – parents help and encourage their children as they complete their homework, but also help them to complete games, puzzles and other activities. Dr Lindsey Cameron and her team want to know more about the behaviours that children and adults engage in during these interactions.

In this project, we want to observe mothers and their children as they work together to complete fun, problem-solving activities in children’s magazines.

What will this involve? You will be sent activities from a range of magazines, such as mazes and code-breaking puzzles, spot the difference and other games. All you will have to do is work through some of these activities with your child, while being recorded via Zoom. A member of our research team will help you get started, and will ensure we have the recording and other information we need.

What will you need? Just your laptop, with microphone on and some pens and pencils.

How long will it take? Approximately 30 minutes.

What data will be collected? Our research team will watch the recording and listen to the audio to identify different types of interaction behaviours.

Age range: 7-8 years.

When will this study start? January 2021.

Get involved: If you have a typically developing 7 to 8-year-old and are interested, please email Isabel at child@kent.ac.uk with the subject-line ‘Parent-child magazine study’ and we will send more detailed information.
