Autistic Child Conversation Skills

We are looking for parents of 6–10-year-olds with a confirmed diagnosis of autism and who meet the following criteria:

  • Attend either a special school or have a place in a Special Resource Provision;
  • Are able to speak in sentences at approximately the same level as ‘typically-developing’ children their age
  • Do NOT also have a diagnosis of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
  • Do NOT have a hearing impairment;
  • Hear predominantly English at home;

We are starting the actual studies in October. However, the first part involves parents completing online questionnaires (stored confidentially and securely).

In the actual study, your child would chat with us over Zoom. We’d first play some games to make sure s/he is feeling comfortable and the study can be stopped at any time. Here is a short video with a volunteer child so you can get an idea: https://youtu.be/RxdGi8CfILs.

We would also carry out some language and puzzle tasks.

For further information, please email Dr Kirsten Abbot-Smith on either conversation@kent.ac.uk or K.Abbot-Smith@kent.ac.uk or child@kent.ac.uk.
