Alejandro Rodiles’ UK visit June 2018

From 8 – 16 June 2018, Alejandro visited Kent Law School (KLS) in the UK for the first collaborative exchange visit of the project. It was a busy week. On Monday we met together in London with Professor Claudia Aradau from the War Studies Department, Kings College London. Professor Aradau is a leading scholar in the field of critical security studies and gave us valuable advice and feedback about the project.

On Tuesday we met with Professor Emilie Cloatre of Kent Law School in Canterbury for a talk on socio-legal research methods, and spent the rest of the day planning the schedule for the research project. On Wednesday Alejandro presented his work on populism and international law (to be published in NYIL, vol 49) at a seminar hosted by the Centre for Critical International Law (CECIL).

On Thursday we both travelled to London for training in Ethnographic Research methods, delivered by Professor Karen O’Reilly for the Social Research Association (SRA). On Friday we attended The Uses and Futures of Interdisciplinary Legal Studies event organised by KLS and were able to discuss and get feedback about our project from one of the keynote speakers and leading critical security studies scholar, Professor Marieke de Goede of the University of Amsterdam. And on Saturday we had breakfast together in Canterbury and planned more of the project before Alejandro left for the airport to fly back to Mexico City.
