Announced in\u00a02016,\u00a0GCRF\u00a0is funded\u00a0by the\u00a0UK government\u2019s\u00a0international aid budget, for research that \u2018<em>addresses the challenges faced by developing countries\u2019<\/em>. Developing countries are defined as those on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oecd.org\/dac\/stats\/daclist.htm\">DAC List.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The fund constitutes many different schemes delivered through many UK funders:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Research Councils<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Large multi-disciplinary research projects, often cross council<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rcuk.ac.uk\/funding\/gcrf\/\">RCUK<\/a>: Research councils UK (as of 2018 renamed UKRI). \u00a3377 million<\/li>\n<li>MRC: Medical sciences research council. \u00a3115 million<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbsrc.ac.uk\/research\/international\/funding\/gcrf\/\">BBSRC<\/a>: Biological sciences research council. \u00a370 million<\/li>\n<li>EPSRC: Engineering and physical sciences research council. \u00a355 million<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.esrc.ac.uk\/research\/international-research\/global-challenges-research-fund-gcrf\/\">ESRC<\/a>: Economics and Social sciences research council. \u00a335 million<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nerc.ac.uk\/research\/partnerships\/international\/gcrf\/\">NERC<\/a>: Natural environment research council. \u00a335 million<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ahrc.ac.uk\/funding\/internationalfunding\/the-global-challenges-research-fund\/\">AHRC<\/a>: Arts and humanities research council. \u00a325 million<\/li>\n<li>STFC: \u00a311 million<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>The academies<\/strong>. \u00a345 million<\/p>\n<p><em>Fellowships, travel grants and seed funding<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Royal Society<\/li>\n<li>British Academy<\/li>\n<li>Royal Academy of Engineering<\/li>\n<li>Academy of medical sciences.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Calls<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>UKCDS (UK Collaborative on development sciences) <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rcuk.ac.uk\/funding\/gcrf\/\">Funding calls<\/a>\u00a0 and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ukcds.org.uk\/subscribe-to-our-mailing-list\">subscribe to mailing list<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>ODA compliance<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>GCRF forms part of the UK&#8217;s Official Development Assistance (ODA) commitment. Therefore GCRF funding can <em>only<\/em> be awarded in a manner that fits with <a title=\"Opens a new window\" href=\"http:\/\/www.oecd.org\/dac\/stats\/officialdevelopmentassistancedefinitionandcoverage.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Official\u00a0ODA\u00a0guidelines<\/a>.
