Jean Monnet lecture: Humiliation in international politics: are rising powers doomed to seek revenge?

29 May 2020

It is often assumed that rising powers will seek revenge for past humiliation, as soon as they have the capacity to do so. But is this necessarily the case?

In a Jean Monnet lecture for the University of Coimbra, Tom Casier will use the examples of China and Russia to argue that reactions may diverge widely and are all but automatic. The collective experience of and response to historical humiliation are specific for every country and result from a mobilisation process that serves other purposes, such as creating legitimacy.

The lecture is held on Friday 29 May 2020 (16.00 Portuguese/UK time, 17.00 Brussels time).
