BioTech Hub Cutting Edge Facilities

Equipment available for use

The BioTech Hub at University of Kent offers a range of fantastic quality and specialist equipment that can help your business to research and test for better quality products and features.

To help you test and research better quality products and features, the Biotechnology Hub has invested in new state of the art equipment, including:

Cell Image Analysis Facility: Zeiss LSM 880 Elyra confocal microscope with Airyscan and PALM/STORM Super Resolution, Jeol 1230 120kV Transmission Electron Microscope, Bruker Multimode Atomic Force Microscope and Leica EM UC7 ultramicrotome and diamond knives.

Biomolecular Science Facility: Protein mass spectrometry (Waters Synapt G2Si and Bruker micrOTOF-Q), GCMS (Agilent, single quad), MALDI-TOF/TOF mass spectrometry, UHPLC, HPLC, nanoLC, fluorimetry, and circular dichroism

Biological NMR Facility: 600 MHz five-channel Bruker Avance III spectrometer with a cryoprobe. The spectrometer is used for structural biology, molecular dynamics measurements, drug binding and discovery campaigns, metabolomics and the analysis of small molecules.

Biosensor Development (Biosciences/Electronic and Digital Arts/Physical Sciences and Chemistry) – A suite of software and equipment to design, protoype and test a range of sensors is available. Sensors can be functionalised to develop biosensors using smart polymers designed in-house and tested using scanning-electron microscopy (SEM) differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis, Raman microscopy, dynamic light scattering analysis (particle sizing), XRD, single-crystal diffractometer, X-ray fluorescence, contact angle analysis, rheometry and polarising optical microscopy.

Other specialist equipment available is: animal cell culture facilities, animal cell and bacterial fermentation, cell sorting, anaerobic sample handling, fast reaction kinetics, parallel computing cluster, laser trap rig, automated sample handling.
