The summit involved a diverse range of speakers, including President Sarkissian, <\/em>Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, Dominique de Villepin (former French PM), James Jones (General USMC), Mikhail Shvydkoy ( Presidential Administration of Russia), Matthew Rojansky (Kennan Institute, Wilson Centre USA),Vladimir Yakunin (Chairman, Endowment Fund \u2018Istoki\u2019, Russia), and many other prominent private sector and public officials, from around the globe. For more information see <a href=\"https:\/\/summitofminds.com\/armenian-summit-of-minds\/\">here<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Formation of Belarusian Statehood in Conditions of Geopolitical Shifts of the 20<sup>th<\/sup> Century, Conference (29 &#8211; 30 November 2018)<\/h3>\n<p>The International Scientific Conference \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/research.kent.ac.uk\/gcrf-compass\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1767\/2018\/12\/BSU-Conference-Nov.-2018-programme-in-BY-and-RU.pdf\">Formation of Belarusian Statehood in Conditions of Geopolitical Shifts of the 20<sup>th<\/sup> Century<\/a>\u201d, dedicated to the centenary anniversary of the events that led to the formation of the Belarusian Soviet Socialistic Republic (BSSR) and predetermined the future path of development of Belarusian statehood, was held on November 29-30, 2018 at the Belarusian State University with support of the GCRF COMPASS project.<\/p>\n<p>More than 120 participants from Belarus, Russian Federation, Ukraine, Poland, Czech Republic and Germany discussed actual problems of the events that led to proclamation of the BSSR, and the influence of geopolitical transformations in East and Central European region on this process.<\/p>\n<p>Other topics of scientific discussion during the conference included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Relations of government and society in the BSSR in the postwar period,<\/li>\n<li>Transformation of social and political life in the second half of the 1980s &#8211; early 1990s.<\/li>\n<li>Proclamation of independence of the Republic of Belarus and the establishment of the presidential political system in the country,<\/li>\n<li>Geopolitical potential of the Republic of Belarus in the context of the integration and globalization processes in the beginning of XXI century<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A separate roundtable dedicated to the role of youth in developing statehood was held jointly involving researchers and current students.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>BASEES Annual Conference 2018 (13-15 April 2018)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>From 13<sup>th<\/sup> to 15<sup>th<\/sup> of April, Eske van Gils (Kent) attended the <a href=\"http:\/\/basees2018.org\/\">BASEES conference\u200b<\/a> in Cambridge. The conference\u2019s main theme this year was human rights in Central and Eastern Europe. Eske presented a paper on \u2018Regime legitimacy and foreign policy in EU-Azerbaijan relations\u2019, in a panel together with Levan Kakhishvili (Tbilisi State University) and Gulshan Pashayeva (Centre for Strategic Studies in Baku).<\/p>\n<h3>Interviewing Experts on Chinese Political Economy (9-12 April 2018)<\/h3>\n<p>Oybek Madiyev conducted several semi-structured interviews with experts on Chinese political economy in Chicago. He discussed about the role of the domestic drivers of China\u2019s Belt &amp; Road Initiative, in particular the provinces, the private companies\/SOEs, and the academic community.<\/p>\n<h3>Participation at the 76th Annual MPSA Conference in Chicago (5-8 April 2018)<\/h3>\n<p>Oybek Madiyev attended the 76th Annual MPSA Conference in Chicago. He presented a paper titled &#8216;Making Sense of China&#8217;s Competitive Investment Strategy in Eurasia&#8217; at the pnes &#8216;New Perspectives on Great Power Politics&#8217;. The panel included several scholars such as Roger Handberg (University of Central Florida), Martha Ross Dewitt (University of Wisconsin-Madison) and Kuan-Sheng Wu (Purdue University) and Junwoo Kim (University of Chicago).<\/p>\n<h3>Participation at ISA Conference in San Francisco (<strong>2-7 April 2018)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1084 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/research.kent.ac.uk\/gcrf-compass\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1767\/2018\/04\/EK-San-Fran-IMG_4349-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" \/> Professor Korosteleva attended this year\u2019s ISA conference in San Francisco, which hosted over 2000 participants. Elena presented a paper at the panel <strong>\u2018<\/strong><strong>Resilience and Global Security: European Union and beyond,\u2019<\/strong> which included \u00a0international scholars, such as Philippe Bourbeau (Laval, Canada), Ana G. Juncos (Bristol), Ben Tonra (UCD), Rosanne Anholt (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam), Christian Lequesne \u00a0(CERI, chair) and David Chandler (Westminster, discussant). The panel generated a lively discussion into the definitions and genealogy of the concept and difficulties of its application to practice. Elena gave a talk on Resilience as the EU new governing strategy and its controversies. Mr Mkei made some introductory comments on Belarus&#8217;s strategic choices, including its relateions with Russia, the EU and the UK, followed by a lively off-the-record discussion.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Participation at &#8216;Belarus in the Current Geo-Political and -Economic Processes&#8217; (28-30 March 2018)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Professor Korosteleva attended the\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kas.de\/belarus\/en\/events\/75303\/\">conference<\/a><\/strong> <strong>&#8216;Belarus in the current geo-political and -economic processes<\/strong>&#8216;, organized by the Academy of Social Sciences and KAS in Minsk, on 28-30 March 2018. The conference discussed many challenges that the post-Soviet region, and Belarus in particular, are facing today, in the changing global order. Elena gave a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/absender\/videos\/10215153435405293\/\">talk<\/a> on the EU Global Security Strategy, resilience and Belarus&#8217; new opportunities for capacity-building, as part of the GCRF COMPASS project.<\/p>\n<h3>Professor Thomas Kruessmann<\/h3>\n<p>The COMPASS team at Kent is delighted to welcome Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/politics\/gec\/research-associates\/thomas-kruessmann.html\">Thomas Kruessmann<\/a>, a co-coordinator of the JM Network \u2018Developing European Studies in the Caucasus, with Tartu University, and Senior Expert in the EU TA project \u2018Strengthening Teaching and Research Capacity at ADA University\u2019. We hope to work together towards developing capacity of the GCRF COMPASS partners within the JM and ERASMUS+ frameworks in the future.<\/p>\n<h3>Tartu Conference (10 &#8211; 12 June 2018)<\/h3>\n<p>Members of the COMPASS team will present in two panels at the Tartu Conference on Russian and Eastern European Studies on 11 June. Dr Saxena and Professor Korosteleva will chair panels on, \u2018Challenges for regional security and capacity-building in the eastern region and Central Asia: (I) a domestic perspective\u2019; and (II) an international perspective\u2019.\u00a0 The first panel will include presentations from Anar Valiyev (Azerbaijan), Munira Shahidi and Nargis Nurulla-Khozhaeva (Tajikistan), Alisher Faizullaev (Uzbekistan) and Andrei Rusakovich (Belarus). The second panel will include presentations from Roza Turarbekava (Belarus), Yauheni Preiherman (Belarus), Oybek Madiyev (Kent), Leonardo Pataccini (Tartu) and Eske Van Gils (Kent). The event was graced by the presence of Her Excellency Ms Iskakova (Kyrgystan), His Excellency Mr Shaykhov (Uzbekistan), His Excellency Mr Jawad (Afghanistan), Head of Mission from Tajikistan to the UK Mr Qurbonov and First Secretary Mr Annayev (Turkmenistan). The Deputy Vice Chancellor and Master of Jesus College, Professor Ian White opened the roundtable with a welcome speech. Professor Nolan and Dr Fennell along with other academics from Cambridge, UCL and University of Kent also gave brief talks.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cultural Evening:<\/strong> Cambridge Central Asia Forum celebrated an amazing evening of Central Asian culture, music, dance and food on the 17th of March on the occasion of Navroz (new year). The evening was a medley of visual treats and included music and dance from Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyz Republic, Turkemnistan and Kazakhstan. MPhil and PhD students from around Cambridge helped organise this event.
