{"id":221,"date":"2025-06-09T08:50:02","date_gmt":"2025-06-09T07:50:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/research.kent.ac.uk\/futuringcommons\/?p=221"},"modified":"2025-06-09T08:51:39","modified_gmt":"2025-06-09T07:51:39","slug":"kicking-off-the-aria-synthetic-plants-programme-team-futuring-at-didcot","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/research.kent.ac.uk\/futuringcommons\/kicking-off-the-aria-synthetic-plants-programme-team-futuring-at-didcot\/","title":{"rendered":"Kicking Off the ARIA Synthetic Plants Programme: Team Futuring at Didcot"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-start=\"166\" data-end=\"382\">In late May, Dr. Katharine Dow, Professor Lynn Frewer, Dr. Lizz Rylott, and Professor Joy Zhang from <strong>Team Futuring<\/strong> joined researchers and collaborators at the ARIA Synthetic Plants Programme Kick-Off event in Didcot.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"384\" data-end=\"647\">Over two lively days, the gathering featured lightning introductions, detailed project talks, and creative team-building activities \u2014 including two standout sessions led by Sara Olson, as well as a \u201cFuture Wheel\u201d workshop facilitated by Rob Smith and Adrian Ely.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"649\" data-end=\"1064\">It was a fantastic opportunity to meet the seven scientific teams embarking on an ambitious mission: to develop methods for introducing synthetic genetic instructions into the chloroplasts and chromosomes of <em data-start=\"857\" data-end=\"876\">Solanum tuberosum<\/em>(the humble potato). The project, <strong data-start=\"214\" data-end=\"315\">&#8220;Cultivating Responsible Innovation for Plant Synthetic Genomics Through Experimental Governance&#8221;<\/strong>, is led by Dr. Robert Smith at the University of Edinburgh and brings together an experienced and thoughtful group of collaborators: Sarah Hartley (University of Exeter), Adrian Ely (University of Sussex), Joana Formosinho (University of Edinburgh), Sophia McCully (Nuffield Council on Bioethics), Sandra Knapp (Natural History Museum), and Alexandra Davet (Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh).<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2597\" data-end=\"2873\">This event marked an inspiring start to what promises to be a bold and boundary-pushing programme.
