{"id":3982,"date":"2023-06-28T09:27:06","date_gmt":"2023-06-28T08:27:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/research.kent.ac.uk\/emcentraleu\/?p=3982"},"modified":"2023-07-06T09:29:58","modified_gmt":"2023-07-06T08:29:58","slug":"cfp-art-of-the-greek-diaspora-conference","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/research.kent.ac.uk\/emcentraleu\/cfp-art-of-the-greek-diaspora-conference\/","title":{"rendered":"Associated CfP: Art of the Greek Diaspora Conference"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><b><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Zamo\u015b\u0107, Poland,<\/span><\/b><span lang=\"EN-GB\">\u00a0<b>9 \u2013 11 May 2024.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">In 2024, we will celebrate 535 years since the Greeks settled in Zamo\u015b\u0107.\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\">The planned meeting will\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\">be related to<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\">\u00a0creative output of the Greek diaspora throughout Europe. The Fall of Constantinople in particular, triggered a resettlement of the Greeks in many countries and regions outside of Greece proper: Italy, the Balkans, Hungary, Poland,\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Ukraine,<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\">\u00a0and elsewhere. The comprehensive study of this type of artistic activity is rare in the history of art.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">We chose the city of Zamo\u015b\u0107 because the local Greek community became one of the most influential within the Greek diaspora throughout the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">The City of Zamo\u015b\u0107, as one of the modern ones, consistently implementing strategic concepts of economic development, was founded by the Chancellor and Grand Hetman of the Crown, Jan Zamoyski, in 1580. Zamo\u015b\u0107, built on the basis of architectural and urban concepts of the Renaissance architectural theories, was planned and\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\">realised<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\">\u00a0by the Italian architect Bernardo Morando. From the very beginning of its functioning, the city became a\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\">multi-ethnic<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\">multicultural<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\">\u00a0organism. During that\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\">period,<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\">\u00a0Armenians,\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Greeks,<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\">\u00a0and Italians played the key roles in shaping the economic life of the city.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">At the time, consisting mostly of merchant class, the Greeks were the second largest national\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\">group<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\">\u00a0after the Armenians. They had received the settlement privilege already in 1589. They were guaranteed all city rights, including access to the city council and offices \u2013\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\">more so<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\">\u00a0than in other cities in the Commonwealth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">As Orthodox believers, they had also formed a separate religious community. They obtained a permission to build their own church, dedicated to St. Nicholas, next to the market square. In 1591, just two years after they were granted the privilege of settlement, 12 Greek families lived near the market square, while the total number of Greek merchants and craftsmen may have reached about 100 people. Most of them were located in the western part of the market, next to the Armenian quarter. The Greeks were also associated with the Zamo\u015b\u0107 Academy.\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Books<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\">\u00a0in Greek were printed in the academic printing\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\">house,<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\">\u00a0making it a significant\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\">centre<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\">\u00a0of Greek printing in the whole Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Conference language: English, French<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Paper submissions should be sent by the end of December 2023 to the following address:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><a href=\"mailto:WaldemarJozef.Deluga@osu.cz\" data-linkindex=\"0\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">WaldemarJozef.Deluga@osu.cz<\/span><\/a><span class=\"x_MsoHyperlink\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><a href=\"mailto:piotr.kondraciuk@akademiazamojska.edu.pl\" data-linkindex=\"1\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">piotr.kondraciuk@akademiazamojska.edu.pl<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">The conference\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\">programme<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\">\u00a0will be announced in the first week of February 2024.
