Display a list of publications from the Kent Academic Repository (KAR)

Setting up a KAR panel

The KAR panel is broken down into a series of tabs, with four of the tabs designated for the taxonomies we can query the KAR API for publications, and the remaining two define the publication type, citation style, and some settings for the panel.

To see the values for each taxonomy click on the toggle switch ‘Search against…’ on the relevant section.

Authors

You can display a list of publications for a single or multiple authors using their email or ORCID iD, although please not that ORCID is only permitting single author searching at the moment.

You can choose between email OR orchid from the dropdown. Email addresses should match those used on KAR otherwise no matches will be found. To add more email addresses click on the blue ‘Add email address’ button. For orcid, use the full, hyphen separated id.

Divisions

The list of divisions is dynamically generated from the KAR system and will always reflect what is live on KAR. The number in brackets next to the name refers to that divisions id on KAR.

You can search the divisions by clicking on the dropdown list and begin typing. The list will automatically update with matching results.

To add more divisions click on the blue ‘Add dividion / subdivision’ button.

Kent Web Tag

The list of Kent Web Tags is dynamically generated from the KAR system and will always reflect what is live on KAR.

You can search the divisions by clicking on the dropdown list and begin typing. The list will automatically update with matching results.

To add more divisions click on the blue ‘Add dividion / subdivision’ button.

Signature Theme

Signature Themes are not being utilised at present, but has been included for future compatibility.

The list of Signature Themes is dynamically generated from the KAR system and will always reflect what is live on KAR.

You can search the themes by clicking on the dropdown list and begin typing. The list will automatically update with matching results.

Only one Signature Theme per panel can be queried at the present time.

Publication type

By default this is set to ‘All‘ but if you wish to only show one publication type you can select it here. At present we can only have one publication type per panel, but supported for multiple publication types will be added in the coming months. Alternatively, research.kent does allow for multiple KAR panels on a page

Citation style

This option controls the format of the citation information, which ‘APA’ and ‘Harvard’ are supported. Further details about the different options available can be found here: https://www.kent.ac.uk/ai/styleguides.html
Names marked in bold are University of Kent authors. Click on the authors name to view more publications from them on the Kent Academic Repository

Panel settings

Number of publications per page

This relates to the pagination of the publications and will limit the number per page. A larger number will result in more publications on the page but may also slow down the loading time as it waits for the KAR server to process and return the relevant data

Order publications by & Ascending / Descending

Set to ‘Date – Full’ by default, there are several options available to define which field to order the publications against. The actual order of the publications is set by the ascending / descending dropdown.

  • Article number
  • Book title
  • Date – Full
  • Date – Year
  • Divisions
  • Publisher
  • Title
  • Type

Additional information

Match / Merge

As well as defining what taxonomy we wish to search against the KAR API allows us to further define how we wish to query the publications to find suitable matches.  This is via ‘match’ and ‘merge’ parameters for each of the options we select on the panel.

Default values have been assigned and in most cases do not require changing, but where you may wish to perform a more complex query, or the API is not returning any publications so far you may wish to change the two dropdowns next to the relevant taxonomy you are querying against.

The ‘match’ parameter can be:

  • IN (index)
Treat the value as a string as a list of individual words and search for each one
  • EQ (equal)
Treat the value as a single string. Match only fields which have this whole value.
  • EX (exact)
Similar to EQ, but if the value is an empty string then search for fields which are empty, as oppose to skipping this search field

The “merge” parameter can be:

  • ANY
Match an item if any of the space-separated words in the value match
  • ALL
Match an item only if all of the space-separated words in the value match

Merge has no affect on EX matches, which always match the entire value.

Example

  • Kent Web Tag
    • Physics of Quantum Materials
  • All publication types
  • APA citation style
  • 10 per page
  • Sorted by date, descending
