YEAR 1: December 2021 - December 2022: How is philanthropic citizenship encouraged in primary schools in England, and is there equity in access to giving opportunities for children?

Project 1 seeks to conduct a nationwide study of how, what and to whom philanthropic citizenship is taught in primary education. We will conduct an extensive, nationwide survey engaging KS1 and KS2 teachers across England. This project will critically contribute to understanding equity in access to philanthropic citizenship education for children, and the types of activities promoted across different demographics, how these are designed and resourced, and by whom.

Project 2 seeks to understand the different pedagogical approaches at play which inform how philanthropic citizenship is encouraged in primary schools. YEAR 3: December 2023 - December 2024: What is the impact of philanthropic citizenship on children’s perceptions of giving?

Drawing on data collected from the surveys and interviews, where teachers perceptions of the impact of philanthropic citizenship will be considered, project 3 will work with children from purposefully sampled case study schools delivering different types of philanthropic citizenship programmes to consider children’s lived experience of charitable activities within school, their levels of active participative involvement in philanthropic decisions, their perceptions of charitable giving and philanthropic citizenship and what matters to them in context of this project.
