Each year SEPnet gives postgraduate students the opportunity to submit a proposal to organise and host their own two day conference. This year’s student-led conferences took place on 21st-23rd March, at the University of Southampton, with over 60 delegates taking part in two parallel sessions:

– Advances in High Energy Physics and Cosmology

– From Micrometres to Megaparsecs

‘From Micrometres to Megaparsecs’ was organised by Justyn Campbell-White and Sam Billington from the Centre for Astrophysics and Planetary Science (CAPS) at the University of Kent, and Ben Mawdsley from the Institute of Cosmology and Gravitation (ICG) at the University of Portsmouth. The talks were focused on a wide range of astronomy topics, ranging from micrometeorites to the cosmic microwave background. The event also featured a career panel, where current students were able to ask questions to a number of academics about how an academic career may progress, and a speed networking session for students to interact with one another and learn valuable skills need for their advancement.

The whole conference ran smoothly and was a fantastic opportunity for students around the south-east to present their research and network with others in their respective fields.
