Thesis Title: An Investigation into the Survivability of Biological Materials Following Hypervelocity Impacts

Research interests

The main focus of my research relates to the ejecta from the cryovolcanoes of Enceladus, a moon of Saturn. This ejecta provides the opportunity for a spacecraft to indirectly sample the moon’s subsurface ocean, which may be an ideal environment for life to develop. My research investigates the survivability of salts and brines, similar to those which have been detected, following hypervelocity impacts. This aims to show if there is biological material present in Enceladus’ plumes, whether it will still be detectable following its capture by a spacecraft.
