Michael Daley was born in Hull, Yorkshire, on 15 January 1944 and was educated at Hull High School for Arts and Crafts from 1956 to 1960. He then studied sculpture and etching at Hull Regional College of Art from 1960 to 1965 – being awarded a travelling scholarship to Greece in 1964 – and at the Royal Academy Schools in London from 1965 to 1968, where he won bronze and silver medals for sculpture and drawing.

From 1968 to 1982 Daley lectured in sculpture and drawing at the City and Guilds Art School, and at Kingston Polytechnic. From 1969 to 1970 he also worked as a designer on The Black Dwarf, Idiot International and a number of industrial relations journals.

In 1982 Daley became chief illustrator on the Financial Times, leaving to work on the Independent from 1987 to 1997. Since 1982 he has also drawn cartoons and illustrations for Sunday Times, Sunday Telegraph, Daily Telegraph, Times Educational Supplement, Times Higher Educational Supplement, Listener, Early Music Magazine, Independent on Sunday and various book publishers – including Viking Kestrel, Methuen, Blackwell, and Chatto & Windus.

Daley has also written art criticism for Art Review, Art Monthly, The Art Newspaper, Journal of Art, Sunday Telegraph, Independent and Independent on Sunday amongst others. In 1987 he received a Special Commendation for his work in the British Press Awards.
