Mocked up illustration of touchdown impact on Antarctica by Mark A. Garlick

Catastrophic Disruption!

In our impact lab, we not only make craters when we hit targets, we can blow them apart (called catastrophic disruption).

In the attached video we show what happens if you hit ice spheres with so much energy they blow up!

The paper describing this work was published in the “The Planetary Science Journal” in 2020.
