The geological history of water-rich asteroids: new insights from meteorites and first results from the Hayabusa2 and OSIRIS-REx space missions
Abstract: Water-rich asteroids formed in the outer solar system were likely the main source of volatiles and organics to the terrestrial planets. Carbonaceous chondrite meteorites are samples of these asteroids that can be studied in the laboratory. I will talk about how we are using carbonaceous chondrites to unravel the complex geological history of primitive water-rich asteroids, and how our results compare with new observations of asteroids Ryugu and Bennu by the Hayabusa2 and OSIRIS-REx space missions.
