{"id":8491,"date":"2026-05-08T14:38:20","date_gmt":"2026-05-08T13:38:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/research.kent.ac.uk\/applied-optics\/?p=8491"},"modified":"2026-07-21T12:30:55","modified_gmt":"2026-07-21T11:30:55","slug":"msc-project-in-a-low-cost-device-for-medical-imaging","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/research.kent.ac.uk\/applied-optics\/2026\/05\/08\/msc-project-in-a-low-cost-device-for-medical-imaging\/","title":{"rendered":"MSc Project to Develop an Affordable Medical Imaging System for Global Healthcare"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em><strong>MSc by Research: 1 year full time or 2 years part time.<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Supervisor:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/research.kent.ac.uk\/applied-optics\/hughes\">Dr Michael Hughes<\/a><\/p>\n<p>This project is an opportunity to work on a new medical imaging technology.<\/p>\n<p>Your contribution could help bring high-resolution diagnostic imaging into community clinics, dental practices and healthcare settings where conventional systems are currently too expensive or impractical.<\/p>\n<p>Our technology is based on Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), an optical imaging techniques that has been a focus of research at Kent for many years.<\/p>\n<p>We have developed an architecture which allows us to achieve high-quality images from an OCT system using only low-cost components.<\/p>\n<p>Through your project you will lead on one aspect of development, answering questions such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Can the optical design be simplified further without compromising image quality?<\/li>\n<li>Can machine-learning methods improve reconstruction from low-cost hardware?<\/li>\n<li>How accurately can the device image clinically relevant tissue?<\/li>\n<li>What engineering changes are needed to make the system robust outside the laboratory?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-11898\" src=\"https:\/\/research.kent.ac.uk\/applied-optics\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1653\/2026\/05\/20260601_1517292.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" srcset=\"https:\/\/research.kent.ac.uk\/applied-optics\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1653\/2026\/05\/20260601_1517292.jpg 1920w, https:\/\/research.kent.ac.uk\/applied-optics\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1653\/2026\/05\/20260601_1517292-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/research.kent.ac.uk\/applied-optics\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1653\/2026\/05\/20260601_1517292-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/research.kent.ac.uk\/applied-optics\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1653\/2026\/05\/20260601_1517292-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/research.kent.ac.uk\/applied-optics\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1653\/2026\/05\/20260601_1517292-1536x864.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Depending on your experience and interests you might be:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>designing and carrying out experiments;<\/li>\n<li>building or modifying optical systems;<\/li>\n<li>developing original software in Python;<\/li>\n<li>collecting and analysing data;<\/li>\n<li>presenting findings to collaborators;<\/li>\n<li>contributing to publications, patents or conference presentations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>MSc Degree<\/h2>\n<p>Completion of the research project will lead to submission of a thesis for examination for award of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/courses\/postgraduate\/212\/physics\">MSc degree<\/a>. There are no written examinations, but research group members deliver lectures in areas of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/courses\/modules\/module\/PHYS7015\">biomedical optics<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/courses\/modules\/module\/PHYS6019\">medical physics<\/a> which MSc students may attend, in addition to a <a href=\"https:\/\/research.kent.ac.uk\/applied-optics\/aog-seminars\/\">programme of seminars<\/a> by internal and external speakers.<\/p>\n<p>The project does not have funding attached, students must be able to fund the fees and their living costs by applying for a suitable scholarship, see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/scholarships\/postgraduate\">https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/scholarships\/postgraduate,<\/a> or through some another source of funds. The group develops innovative optical imaging and sensing technologies with applications across healthcare and industry.<\/p>\n<p>Housed within the Photonics Centre, the AOG benefits from facilities including ten dedicated optical laboratories, a clean-air room, electrical-mechanical workshop with 3D printing, and extensive resources for the design and prototyping of optical systems and devices.
