{"id":4452,"date":"2019-02-10T16:13:30","date_gmt":"2019-02-10T16:13:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/research.kent.ac.uk\/upgrade-applied-optics\/?p=4452"},"modified":"2019-10-25T19:33:15","modified_gmt":"2019-10-25T18:33:15","slug":"aog-at-spie-photonics-west-2019","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/research.kent.ac.uk\/applied-optics\/2019\/02\/10\/aog-at-spie-photonics-west-2019\/","title":{"rendered":"AOG at SPIE Photonics West 2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Applied Optics Group was well represented at the <strong>2019 edition of SPIE Photonics West<\/strong>, which again took place at the Moscone Center in (not-so-sunny this time) San Francisco, California. <strong>Four AOG members have attended the conference<\/strong>, which lasted a total of six days, <strong>all presenting talks and posters resulting from peer-reviewed submissions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/research.kent.ac.uk\/applied-optics\/person\/prof-adrian-podoleanu\/\">Prof Adrian Podoleanu<\/a> was first, straight on Saturday morning, <strong>giving a talk<\/strong> at the <a href=\"https:\/\/spie.org\/PWB\/conferencedetails\/high-speed-big-data-instrumentation-management\"><span class=\"header-title \">High-Speed Biomedical Imaging and Spectroscopy<\/span> conference<\/a> titled <em> Speeding up master slave optical coherence tomography by matrix manipulation<\/em>, covering the group&#8217;s latest achievements on complex <a href=\"https:\/\/research.kent.ac.uk\/applied-optics\/en-face-oct\/master-slave-oct\/\">Master\/Slave interferometry<\/a> (CMSI). Prof Podoleanu also <strong>chaired<\/strong> the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.spie.org\/PWB\/conferencedetails\/high-speed-big-data-instrumentation-management#session-4\"><em>High Speed Volumetric Microscopy<\/em><\/a> session of this conference later in the day.<\/p>\n<p>PDRA <a href=\"https:\/\/research.kent.ac.uk\/applied-optics\/person\/dr-manuel-jorge-marques\/\">Dr Manuel Marques<\/a> <strong>also presented<\/strong> later on the same day at the <a href=\"https:\/\/spie.org\/PWB\/conferencedetails\/endoscopic-microscopy\">Endoscopic Microscopy conference<\/a>, with a talk on a multi-modal endoscopic OCT\/fluorescence imager titled <em>Multi-modal OCT\/fluorescence en-face surgical imaging using a robotic actuator<\/em>, which was the result of a collaborative effort with our colleagues at the Hamlyn Centre.<\/p>\n<p>Day two of Photonics West: <a href=\"https:\/\/research.kent.ac.uk\/applied-optics\/person\/michael-hughes\/\">Dr Mike Hughes<\/a> <strong>presented<\/strong> in the same Endoscopic Microscopy conference some interesting work done with PDRA <a href=\"https:\/\/research.kent.ac.uk\/applied-optics\/person\/chaitanya-mididoddi\/\">Chai Middidodi<\/a> in a talk titled <em>Towards high speed needle microscopy through a multimode fiber by single pixel imaging<\/em>. Chai couldn&#8217;t be there in person as he had just become a father &#8211; our congratulations to him and his family!<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4469\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4469\" class=\"size-large wp-image-4469\" src=\"https:\/\/research.kent.ac.uk\/applied-optics\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1653\/2019\/02\/UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_375c-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/research.kent.ac.uk\/applied-optics\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1653\/2019\/02\/UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_375c.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/research.kent.ac.uk\/applied-optics\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1653\/2019\/02\/UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_375c-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/research.kent.ac.uk\/applied-optics\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1653\/2019\/02\/UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_375c-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-4469\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The OCT poster session attracted a significant amount of interest!<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Later that same day, Prof Adrian Podoleanu and Dr Manuel Marques attended the <a href=\"https:\/\/spie.org\/PWB\/conferencedetails\/optical-coherence-tomography\"><em><span class=\"header-title \">Optical Coherence Tomography and Coherence Domain Optical Methods in Biomedicine<\/span><\/em><\/a> conference poster session, where <strong>three AOG posters were presented<\/strong>: Manuel&#8217;s poster on long range OCT imaging enabled by CMSI, <em>Long axial range swept-source OCT instrument enhanced by complex master-slave processing <\/em>(related with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.osapublishing.org\/osac\/abstract.cfm?uri=osac-1-4-1251\">paper<\/a> published in OSA Continuum late last year), a poster titled <em>Evaluation of a commercial-grade camera for line field spectral-domain optical coherence tomography<\/em>, based on research carried out by former Erasmus+ student <a href=\"https:\/\/research.kent.ac.uk\/applied-optics\/person\/mathis-fauchart\/\">Mathis Fauchart<\/a> on the implementation of a line-field OCT system employing a commercial-grade camera, and a poster on utilising the phase in CMSI titled <em>Employing the phase in master slave interferometry<\/em>, presented by Prof Podoleanu. The poster session was <strong>very busy<\/strong>, with the posters on CMSI attracting great interest!<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4473\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4473\" class=\"size-large wp-image-4473\" src=\"https:\/\/research.kent.ac.uk\/applied-optics\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1653\/2019\/02\/IMG_20190204_145637-1024x652.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"652\" srcset=\"https:\/\/research.kent.ac.uk\/applied-optics\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1653\/2019\/02\/IMG_20190204_145637-1024x652.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/research.kent.ac.uk\/applied-optics\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1653\/2019\/02\/IMG_20190204_145637-300x191.jpg 300w, https:\/\/research.kent.ac.uk\/applied-optics\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1653\/2019\/02\/IMG_20190204_145637-768x489.jpg 768w, https:\/\/research.kent.ac.uk\/applied-optics\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1653\/2019\/02\/IMG_20190204_145637.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-4473\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Andy presenting his talk in the Endoscopy conference.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>PhD student <a href=\"https:\/\/research.kent.ac.uk\/applied-optics\/person\/mr-andrew-thrapp\/\">Andy Thrapp<\/a> completed the AOG presentation schedule on day three with his very interesting and engaging <strong>talk<\/strong> on <em>Motion compensation in structured illumination fluorescence endomicroscopy. <\/em>Prof Podoleanu <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spie.org\/PWB\/conferencedetails\/optical-coherence-tomography#session-7\"><strong>chaired<\/strong><\/a> another session,\u00a0<em>Ophthalmology II<\/em>, on Tuesday, this time in the main OCT conference.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4482\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4482\" class=\"size-large wp-image-4482\" src=\"https:\/\/research.kent.ac.uk\/applied-optics\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1653\/2019\/02\/UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_3766-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/research.kent.ac.uk\/applied-optics\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1653\/2019\/02\/UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_3766.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/research.kent.ac.uk\/applied-optics\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1653\/2019\/02\/UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_3766-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/research.kent.ac.uk\/applied-optics\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1653\/2019\/02\/UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_3766-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-4482\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The post-conference social activities are also part of the experience! \ud83d\ude00<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In addition to the talks and posters contributed by the AOG, there were also a number of talks from collaborators acknowledging AOG members, namely those stemming from the long-standing collaboration with DTU and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fotonik.dtu.dk\/english\/Research\/NonlinearOpticsBiophotonics\/Supercontin\/Projects\/ShapeOCT\">ShapeOCT<\/a> project with Prof Ole Bang. <a href=\"https:\/\/research.kent.ac.uk\/applied-optics\/person\/mr-mikkel-jensen\/\">Mikkel Jensen<\/a> and Christian Petersen both <strong>presented work on supercontinuum developments in the mid-IR region<\/strong>, which has culminated in the development of an OCT system which can actually work in that wavelength range with reasonable imaging speed.
