The Applied Optics Group had a very strong presence at the 7th Annual Postgraduate Festival. The event that took place on Tuesday 16 May in the newly built Sibson building of the University of Kent offered an excellent opportunity to the students to learn and hear more about the work of other UoK researchers through a mix of academic posters, pictures, and presentations.<\/p>\n

Event 1: the 3 Minute Thesis (3MT) competition<\/strong><\/h3>\n

This event was a fantastic opportunity to hear from 6 PhD students who presented their thesis topics in just three minutes as part of the 3 Minute Thesis (3MT) competition. AOG was represented by Magalie<\/strong><\/span>. With an excellent talk of precisely 2m56s, Magalie managed to convince the panel as well as the audience that she is the best! Magalie not only was rewarded with a \u00a3600 prize (\u00a3500 panel, \u00a3100 audience) for her effort, but she will have the huge honour (and responsibility) to represent Kent at the UK semi-finals, and may have the chance to compete at the UK Final at the Vitae Conference in September! Many Congratulations!<\/p>\n

Event 2: Life after postgraduate study alumni panel<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Our representative in the panel was Mike<\/strong><\/span> (Hughes). Mike fascinated the audience with his after PG story. He has managed to return as an academic at Kent after exciting jobs in NHS medical physics and the Hamlyn Centre for Robotics Surgery at Imperial College. Did you know that Mike is only productive 20 hours a week? This is sufficient to be very successful! Mike is an excellent example for those who wants to follow a career in the academia!<\/span><\/p>\n

Event 3: Poster and Photo Presentation<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The presentations showcased the research being done by Kent postgraduate students. AOG was represented by:<\/p>\n

  • Sophie<\/strong>: “Embryo Evolution by swept source optical coherence tomography”<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Mike<\/strong> (Everson): “Optical Power Transmission in a Polygon Mirror Based Swept Source Optical Coherence Tomography System”<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Magalie<\/strong>: “Multimodal Biomedical Imaging”<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
