AOG at Photonics West 2018

The Applied Optics Group was represented at the 2018 edition of SPIE Photonics West, which again took place at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, California, from January 27th to February 1st, 2018.

The five-day conference was divided into three main tracks, with the BiOS one covering all aspects of biomedical optics research, disseminated via keynote speakers, regular/invited talks and poster sessions.

Dr Manuel Marques presenting

Dr Manuel Marques presenting on some of the latest findings in the REBOT project during the Endoscopic Microscopy conference.

Our group leader Prof Adrian Podoleanu was present along with post-doctoral researcher Dr Manuel Marques, who presented a talk in the Endoscopic Microscopy conference titled Interchangeable side-viewing endoscopic probes for optical coherence tomography, covering some of the recent work carried out in the REBOT project.

OCT conference

On the OCT conference poster session, with former students Mr Mikkel Jensen and Mr Michael Maria.

The group also had a couple of poster presentations in the Optical Coherence Tomography and Coherence Domain Optical Methods in Biomedicine conference, namely Snapshot polarization-sensitive plug-in optical module for a Fourier-domain optical coherence tomography system (presented by Dr Manuel Marques) publicising the recently published paper on the snapshot PS-OCT module which can be applied to any frequency-domain OCT system, and Time efficient Gabor fused master slave optical coherence tomography(presented by Prof Adrian Podoleanu) which covered the paper recently published by Dr Ramona Cernat on using the Gabor fusion technique coupled with complex Master-Slave to reduce the processing time of the OCT volumes.

Research poster

Poster detailing Magalie’s research on the multi-modal OCT/PAM instrument in the Photons Plus Ultrasound: Imaging and Sensing conference.

Research on multi-modality imaging methods was also presented in the Photons Plus Ultrasound: Imaging and Sensing conference, with a poster from Magalie Bondu (presented by Prof Adrian Podoleanu) on the recently published multi-modal OCT/multi-band PAM system.

Mr Mikkel Jensen presenting

Mr Mikkel Jensen presenting his latest research at the Photonics in Dermatology and Plastic Surgery conference.

Former visiting MSc student Mr Mikkel Jensen also presented his research in the Photonics in Dermatology and Plastic Surgery, with a talk titled In-vivo detection of the skin dermo-epidermal junction by ultrahigh resolution optical coherence tomography.

Mr Michael Maria presenting

Mr Michael Maria presenting his latest research at the Optics and Biophotonics in Low-Resource Settings conference.

Former PhD student Mr Michael Maria also presented his recently published work on a lower-cost, Q-switched pumped supercontinuum source for OCT applications in the Optics and Biophotonics in Low-Resource Settings conference, with a talk titled Q-switched based supercontinuum source towards low-cost ultra-high resolution optical coherence tomography” .

Prof Virgil-Florin Duma presenting

Prof Virgil-Florin Duma presenting his latest research at the Lasers in Dentistry conference.

Long-time AOG collaborator Prof Virgil-Florin Duma from the University of Arad (Romania) also presented some of the group’s research on dentistry applications, with a talk titled “Temperature variations in sintering ovens for metal ceramic dental prostheses. Non-destructive assessment using OCT” in the Lasers in Dentistry conference.

We also met with some of our collaborators from the Hamlyn Centre at Imperial College London, namely PhD student Ms Khushi Vyas who also had a presentation on the Endoscopic Microscopy conference.
