Career seminars

Developing employability skills is a key priority for the University. SMSAS is committed to helping students gain a wide range of vocational skills and knowledge. As part of this process, we run a series of seminars and workshops during the first half of the Autumn Term.

  • The workshops are intended for all final-year SMSAS students (Stage 3, P.Dip, MSc).
  • The workshops will help you gain the knowledge and skills you need to secure employment in actuarial and other numerate professions.
  • The outline programme is as follows:
1 – Career opportunities and the job market The range of maths-related and actuarial career opportunities open to SMSAS graduates and postgraduates.
2 – Creating a CV Creating a strong CV and seeing how your current version might be able to be improved.
3 – The application process
Identifying suitable opportunities
  • How the application process works (different stages)
  • Overseas students and work permits
  • Completing application forms
  • Completing tests.
  • 4 – Interviews Preparing for job interviews and what employers are looking for.
    5 – Assessment Centres

    All about Assessment Centres and how to prepare for them. For example:

    • Group interviews and exercises: tips on how to perform well;
    • Individual tests: in-tray exercises, written tests, numerical/verbal reasoning tests.
